When I Learned to Swear
The previous item reminded me of a true story: the first time I "swore" in front of a parent. In my case, it was my dad.
I was about 5 when I heard a new-to-me word that I thought was quite expressive, so I waited for an opportunity to use it.
That opportunity came up a day or so later.
I was in the kitchen, and knocked something over. My opportunity!
"Damn it!" I said in a firm, clear voice.
My father, who was in the kitchen, wheeled around and sternly demanded, "Where did you hear that word?!"
My reply stopped him cold: "From mom!"
No, I wasn't punished. :-)
