What, Me Worry?

It's amazing what people worry about. Things like flying, when they are significantly more likely to die in a car crash on the way to the airport than flying on a commercial airliner. Things like cell phone "radiation" when they are significantly more likely to die in a car crash triggered by the inattention caused by talking on the cell phone than the RF exposure from its antenna.

But take a look at this real newspaper photo -- check out her stated worry, and then look closely at her hand:

(For the visually impaired, the caption reads: "Mellisa Williamson, 35, a Bullitt Avenue resident, worries about the effect on her unborn child from the sound of jackhammers." The photo is above an article about road construction on her street. Yet she's shown smoking a cigarette while about 7 months pregnant.)

Think the photo is fake? Nope: It really is from the Roanoke (Virginia) Times from September 20, 2004. One of the paper's columnists discusses the fallout from the photo.
