The Case of the Mistaken Headline

This is real: the big newswire Associated Press ran a story across the wire with this headline (screen shot from AP's web site):

AP headline

If you can't read that, it says:

Rapper Ja Rule Leaves NY Prison in Gun Case

I would have thought most rappers leaving prison in a box would be in a coffin, not a gun case, but....

Ja Rule's real name is Jeffrey Atkins.

The funny thing is, multiple news sites just ran the headline as-is, apparently without noticing how weird it was. Including the New York Daily News, Yahoo News, Fox 5 Las Vegas, Honolulu Star Advertiser, Wall Street Journal, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Business Week, and more.

I guess if it's from the AP, it's got to be right!
